Maths Challenges for Year 6 students

PUBLISHED 17 March 2020

In the Beehive this week the Year 6 children have been extending their understanding of algebra and substitution to tackle ‘Greater Depth’ equations.

Despite the children admitting they were taken out of their comfort zone, occasionally sending them into panic mode - everyone who participated readily accepted the variety of challenges set to stretch their abilities. The year 6 children really enjoyed sharing their ideas and interpretations when solving a wide range of expressions and equations. It was wonderful to see the children justify and defend their outcomes with each conversation, highlighting misconceptions and deepening their understanding of algebraic formula.

All children who come to the Beehive understand that everyone’s contributions are valued and no one’s ideas are dismissed as being ‘wrong’. The children may agree or disagree, but often, they are able to present a new way of looking at the question in focus that none of their classmates thought about.

Despite lots of head scratching and debating over right and wrong answers, everyone battled it out to complete at least 10 (Year 7) based questions correctly! Well done Year 6,
