The Biology Department at AKS aims to develop students’ natural curiosity in living things, and to spark a lifelong interest in and enthusiasm for the subject. At all stages, opportunites are provided to explore the subject in considerable depth: students enjoy finding out more about Biology in any given topic, including not only the current nature of our understanding in the field but also the wide range of applications which stem from it.
Our department comprises four very experienced, passionate, and dedicated teachers, all with their own subject specialisms in areas ranging from Cell and Developmental Biology through to Genetics and Ecology & Conservation.
Students begin their studies of Biology as part of our Year 7 and 8 Science courses; then, from Year 9 onwards, they are taught separate sciences by subject specialists. All students in Year 9 begin their studies of the AQA GCSE in Biology, which we regard as an excellent preparation for post-16 study.
It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living. Sir David Attenborough
It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change. Charles Darwin
