On Tuesday 20th May, the AKS Drama Department went to see Dear Evan Hansen at the Grand Theatre in Blackpool with years 9 and 10. The musical follows Evan, a socially anxious teen who writes letters to himself as therapy. When one letter is found by Connor Murphy, a classmate who later takes his own life, Evan becomes entangled in a web of lies about their friendship. As the truth unravels, Evan loses Zoe, Connor’s sister, but reconciles with his mother. A year later, now in college and working part-time, Evan meets Zoe at Connor’s favourite orchard. They share a final moment, and Evan reflects on all that’s happened.
My favourite part of the show was the performance of ‘You Will Be Found.’ It was incredibly emotional, and I loved how the cast came together in that moment, it created a powerful and moving atmosphere in the theatre. The acting and characterisation throughout were outstanding. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to see a production like this, especially knowing that not all schools get these experiences. Drama is such an important part of my life, and seeing a show like Dear Evan Hansen reminded me why. The biggest message I took away was the importance of talking openly about mental health and offering more support to those who need it.
Overall, Dear Evan Hansen is a fantastic show, and I’d highly recommend it. I really hope we get the chance to see another production just as amazing!
