Last week, Year 3 set off on their first ever residential trip—to the beautiful and historic Borwick Hall, nestled near Carnforth. Excitement buzzed through the air as the children boarded the coach, bags packed and ready for a couple of days filled with fun, challenges, and adventure.
One of the activities on the agenda was the climbing wall. Harnesses on and helmets clipped, the children showed real determination and bravery as they scaled the wall—some even reaching the very top! A highlight was learning to belay (with adult supervision, of course), giving the children a true sense of teamwork and trust.
Another favourite involved balance and problem-solving on the low ropes course. Working in pairs and small groups, the children navigated swinging platforms, rope bridges, and tricky obstacles—all just a few feet off the ground but challenging enough to make every step count. There were plenty of giggles, a few wobbles, and lots of cheering each other on.
As the sun went down, the group gathered around a campfire, where they roasted marshmallows, sang songs, and shared stories. It was a wonderful chance to relax, reflect on the day’s adventures, and enjoy the simple joy of being outdoors with friends.
The final activity saw the children take to the water in bell boats—sturdy, twin-hulled canoes perfect for group paddling. With paddles in hand (and varying degrees of coordination!), they worked together to glide along the canal. Of course, the real highlight came when they were given the go-ahead to jump into the canal and slide in off the back of a canoe. There was shrieking, laughter, and plenty of splashing!
However, despite all the climbing, paddling, and adventuring, the hardest challenge of the trip might just have been… putting bedding on the beds. There were duvet covers worn like capes, pillowcases mistaken for socks, and a lot of very puzzled faces. But with perseverance (and a little help from friends and staff), every child managed to get their bed made—eventually!
This residential wasn’t just about outdoor activities; it was about building independence, strengthening friendships, and making memories. We’re incredibly proud of how every child embraced the challenges, looked out for one another, and represented our school so wonderfully.
Here’s to many more adventures ahead!
