After a successful indoor cricket season girls’ cricket at AKS is proving very popular and going from strength to strength with 6 teams taking to the field in glorious sunny cricket weather last week.
First to take to the field were the Year 7 girls with A & B teams playing their first cricket match of the season against Rossall with both teams recording hard fought victories. Many students were making their debut in competitive cricket and it was a fantastic opportunity for all, as every girl in the year group was given the chance to participate and gain valuable match experience.
Both games served as an excellent learning curve, with clear progress made throughout. There were moments of great excitement as the team celebrated taking wickets and hitting boundaries. Communication between batters was particularly impressive, helping to build partnerships, score runs, and maintain wickets. As the matches went on, bowling improved noticeably, with players growing in confidence and skill. Both teams enjoyed the game and took pride in their performances, looking forward to future matches and building on what they have learned.
The A team match saw Penny A & Amelie Y bat superbly to help AKS record 258 runs . On the bowling front Grace W improved as the game progressed and with great fielding from Arabella C and all the team we limited Rossall to 248 to win by just 10 runs. The B team also came out on top scoring 296 runs whilst limiting Rossall to 268 .
On Saturday in glorious sunshine, our U15 team faced off against the more experienced hardball players from Stonyhurst in the National Cup 1st Round. Despite the challenging matchup, our girls showcased remarkable determination and skill throughout the game.
The day began with our team taking to the field first, displaying impressive bowling and fielding efforts. , We saw economical bowling from Megan F, Penny D, Maisie W and Connie F, with wickets taken by Maisie, Natalie H, Megan and Connie and along with excellent fielding from Emily B Stonyhurst posted a total of 342 runs.
Our girls showed great resilience at the crease, putting up a competitive fight against their seasoned opponents. The batting display was commendable from everyone, with a few standout performances from Penny D, Kathryn S and Maisie W that highlighted the talent within the squad. However, despite the spirited effort from our girls, it was Stonyhurst who emerged victorious with AKS posting 275 runs. Their experience shone through as they capitalized on their opportunities, ultimately leading them to a well-deserved win.
Overall, this match was a valuable learning experience for our U15 team. The combination of hard work, skill development, and camaraderie on the field will undoubtedly contribute to their growth as players. We look forward to seeing them apply these lessons in their upcoming fixtures.
The popularity of the game was highlighted as the U15 B team also played against Stonyhurst and enjoyed a superb match despite not winning.
The U13 A & B teams also enjoyed a fantastic morning of girls cricket at Stonyhurst . With the sun shining, AKS A chose to field first. Fantastic bowing by all our girls saw 3 wickets. AKS went into bat where they faced strong opposition bowling. Game finished in the glorious sunshine AKS: 263 Stonyhurst: 281
The U13B team saw many girls play their first game of competitive cricket. AKS chose to field first and displayed some great skills managing 6 wickets (1 caught, 1 stumped and 4 bowled). Some very impressive bowling and fielding shown. AKS moving to batting next, showing confidence, displaying excellent teamwork and strong communication throughout the innings. The batting performance showed great promise, with several players contributing solidly to the scoreboard. It was encouraging to see partnerships being built and runs being accumulated with smart play and positive intent. Ended as a very close game with Stonyhurst winning by 9 runs.
