Learning Outside the Classroom Day – A Celebration of Nature and Discovery

On Thursday 8 May 2025, our school proudly took part in Learning Outside the Classroom Day, joining schools across the country in a national celebration of the power and joy of outdoor learning.
From the moment the day began, there was a real sense of excitement in the air as every class embraced the opportunity to learn in the natural environment. With the sun shining and spirits high, children and staff made the most of our outdoor spaces, exploring the curriculum through fresh air, creativity, and collaboration.
The day began with a whole school outdoor assembly, setting the tone for a memorable day of connection—with nature, with each other, and with new ideas. Each class took part in activities specially designed to blend learning with the outdoors, sparking curiosity and joy across the school.
Year 6 gathered around a real campfire to explore the science behind popcorn while learning about fire safety. Year 5 combined science and food technology by making water filters and cooking delicious macaroni cheese in the open air. Year 4 became artists in nature, collecting leaves, petals, and twigs to create stunning natural collages. Year 3 turned the outdoors into a concert hall with a vibrant music lesson inspired by the sounds and rhythms of nature. Year 2 marked 80 years since VE Day by visiting the school’s Peace Pole, reflecting on its message of harmony across cultures and linking this to their art lessons. Year 1 enjoyed sensory play in the mud kitchen and planted beautiful bluebells, learning how to care for plants and support local wildlife. Reception had great fun planting beans and learning about the lifecycle of a plant through hands-on exploration. Pre-school had a magical time creating nature wands, using sticks, flowers, and leaves collected from around the grounds. In addition to these focused activities, children across the school also enjoyed maths trails, creative writing inspired by nature, gardening, and teamwork challenges—all contributing to a day full of laughter, discovery, and growth.
A huge thank you to our wonderful children and staff who brought such energy, imagination, and enthusiasm to every activity. The day reminded us of the incredible benefits of outdoor learning—not just for knowledge and skills, but for well-being, confidence, and joy. We’re already looking forward to our next outdoor education adventure!
