1000km Challenge vs Ashford School, Kent

The end of term saw the AKS community take part in an active challenge against Ashford School from Kent. This initiative was a collaboration between the two schools, both members of the United Learning Schools Group, aimed at promoting teamwork and positive action amongst both communities.

The challenge set was to see which school could walk, run or cycle the furthest over a weekend with both schools’ aiming to reach at least 1000km. Unfortunately, the Fylde Coast weather made it more of a challenge with heavy rain on the Saturday and 55mph winds on the Sunday. Undeterred, pupils from both the Preparatory and Senior school took part, along with parents, teachers and governors. A fantastic effort saw 135 members of the AKS community cover 1866.77km which was an amazing achievement considering the atrocious weather conditions. Congratulations to Ashford School who won the challenge with a distance of 2475km covered by 231 participants. This ‘long distance, lockdown’ event proved to be so popular with everyone that both schools’ have decided to make it an annual event.

AKS also used the event as part of the on going Inter-House Competition to encourage participation as well as performance. The final results were: 1st Samlesbury, 2nd Leighton, 3rd Rufford, 4th Gawthorpe.

Miss De Miranda who organised the challenge at the AKS end was delighted with the fantastic teamwork shown by the AKS community, “Every person who participated whether running, walking or cycling made a difference and helped us reach and surpass our initial challenge target of 1000km, thank you for your support. Let the training start for 2021!”
