The summer term at AKS has certainly been very different with PE delivered via Sype lessons, pupils given different sporting challenges to overcome and encouraged to undertake their own fitness sessions at home. As the term comes to an end, however, we look back on another sporting first for AKS with the holding of a hugely successful ‘Virtual’ Sports Day which saw pupils in all years, reception to Year 10, parents and staff take part in a range of running, jumping, throwing and fun events and the awarding of the Annual Sports Day Champion trophy for 2020.
The action packed four weeks saw large numbers take part in each of the events to earn valuable house points in the traditional way, all working together to achieve the accolade of being crowned House Champions. There were lots of rivalries with many families seeing a number of siblings and their parents all taking part and the inter-house competition was just as fierce with the top spot changing hands over the weeks.
With all entries received and points added up it was all the pupils of Rufford House who were celebrating being crowned champions by amassing a superb 7420 points. Rufford Preparatory School House Captain Maria and Jayden received the trophy on behalf of the House. In second place were Salmesbury ( 6530 points) , Leighton third (5210 points) and Gawthorpe fourth (4100 points).
As well as the pupils contributing points to their house total they also accumulated points towards the individual year champion awards where competition for the top spot was close in many year groups. Emily (Year 1) and Penny (Year 2 ) dominated their age group with both winning an incredible eleven events to take their year group titles. Laura A ( Year 7 ) and Jessica A ( Year 8 ) were triumphant in seven events to clinch top spot while there were six wins for Millie (Reception), Olivia ( Year 4 ) and Ruby ( Year 6) and five individual wins for Sadie ( Year 3) Finn R ( Year 8) Anna P, Kate S and Ben L (year 9) .
Director of Sport Mr Mark Walmsely said “ Our first ever ‘Virtual’ Sports Day has proved a fantastic success. We have been impressed with the level of participation in all the four weeks and It has been tremendous to see the videos of so many pupils, parents and staff taking part in all the different events. Congratulations to House Champions, Rufford and to all the individual event winners but most of all to every single person who took part in this very unusual Sports Day”
