Mr Avis provides a round-up of the week...
We’ve had great fun in English this week identifying colloquial phrases in classic fiction alongside discussing Lancashire colloquialisms from the past and present day. The children were able to identify archaic words and phrases from the Wizard of Oz which they will use later on to make their own character’s stories authentic and believable.
Worded problem solving has been top priority this week as the children come to the end of their focus on multiplication. Asking the children to verbalise their numerical reasoning and to explain not just what they’re doing, but why they’re doing it, is key. We’ll be continuing with worded investigations throughout the year, giving the children the opportunity to reason out loud and work on their maths problem solving skills. It’s been wonderful to see the children develop their tenacity and resilience as they begin to recognise and adopt strategies in their applications.
In PSHE we have been exploring what it means to have a good sleep, what this may look like physically and how someone who has slept well might behave and feel. The children have learned about the benefits of a good night’s sleep to the body and thought about different actions they could take to regularly get good quality sleep. Some of the children were quite surprised at my recommendation to be in bed by 8.30pm on a school night!
In science the children have been developing their understanding of light and reflection and wrote superb explanations of how the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. They could think of many examples of how angled mirrors can be used in different ways. The children then put their new knowledge into practice by creating their very own periscopes. They used cardboard and inserted mirrors into their periscopes and observed how the mirrors reflected the light, to enable them to see around a corner or over the top of another object. I was able to witness their handiwork from below my desk, from a periscope I’d made earlier! Great work Year 6!
In Art, the children have continued their study of Romero Britto and his work and have begun to design their own inspired self-portraits. Mrs Hine showed the children a stunning example she painted of Mrs Leeming in the style of this incredible artist. I can’t wait for you all to see the portrait gallery of the Year 6 children when they are completed!
Finally, in PE, football has been the name of the game for the boys. Mr Moretti and I have been very impressed with their football skills and tricks. We’re very fortunate to have such proficient players at AKS, especially newcomers Aiden and Jack, who’ve both excelled on the field this week! Great skills boys, your Maradona spin moves alongside Tino’s were just brilliant!
