On Friday 20th June, Year 6 pupils were once again treated to one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the Prep School calendar: Dr Carey’s annual heart dissection session. This hands-on masterclass, led by our esteemed parent and medical professional, brings the Year 6 “Healthy Bodies” Science topic vividly to life.
Once again, armed with gloves, aprons, and curiosity, the Year 6 pupils explored the anatomy of a calf’s heart. An unforgettable opportunity to examine the chambers, valves, and vessels that keep blood flowing through the body. The session not only deepened their understanding of the circulatory system but also sparked awe and fascination. It’s no surprise that younger year groups are always peeking in, eager for their turn when they reach Year 6.
What sets this session apart is the unique blend of clinical precision and child led discovery. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions and lots of them. And they do! Dr Carey generously gave up his time in what has become the now traditional hot seat, fielding a barrage of thoughtful questions about the heart and pulmonary system. His calm, clear explanations helped demystify complex biological processes and inspired budding young scientists and hopefully future doctors.
Beyond the biology, this experience builds confidence, critical thinking, and teamwork, skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Research shows that practical dissection fosters a deeper appreciation of anatomy, improves observational skills and enhances long-term retention.
We extend our sincere thanks to Dr Carey for his continued support, time and generosity. His contribution is not only valued—it’s transformative. Year after year, this session remains a highlight for our pupils and we are deeply grateful for the expertise and enthusiasm he brings to our school community.
