First half of the rugby season

PUBLISHED 08 November 2023

AKS continue to build on the successes of last year with a fantastic first half to the season.

1st XV

The 1st XV Hit the ground running with a pre-season tournament at Merchant Taylors. This saw the debut of Tommy, Sammy, Lucas, and William into the 1st XV, with all boys equipping themselves well. AKS won against Caldy GS and Merchant Taylors and lost to St Anselm’s.

AKS then set off on a 5-game winning streak, beating Altrincham, Giggleswick, Ripley St Thomas, Runshaw, and Austin Friars, but narrowly lost out to Stonyhurst in a gutsy performance, in their last game before half term.

U16

The U16 have had a mixed season, winning against Dame Allen in the first week, but losing with a depleted squad against Giggleswick and Stonyhurst. The squad is progressing well in the Lancashire Cup beating Birkdale and will face Stonyhurst in the next round.

U15

In their first game of the season AKS U15’s lost to a very strong Dame Allen School from the North East. This galvanised the squad and they then went on a 6-game unbeaten run up to half term, beating Altrincham, Giggleswick, Ripley St Thomas, Ormskirk, and Austin Friars. However, the most impressive win was 7-0 against Stonyhurst, where the team showed huge determination and resilience against a very good Stonyhurst team. The squad has shown a huge development from last year which has shown in their results.

U14

This half term has been one of development for the U14, this has seen them lose the Dame Allen and Altrincham. Before picking up 3 good wins, the most notable, a 22-12 win over Giggleswick. The squad continue to develop under the watchful eye of Mr Daws, and will no doubt continue to develop and flourish under his guidance.

U13

The U13s had a tough first game losing to Dame Allen, but have since been unbeaten, with strong performances against Altrincham, Giggleswick, Ripley St Thomas, and Stonyhurst. This is a large squad, and it is fantastic to see all 28 boys representing the school at rugby from the year group. This included a B team fixture against Armfield Academy where they won in a close battle against some real athletes.

U12

In their first season at AKS, the U12s have had a fantastic start to the season, winning 3 from their 5 fixtures against strong opposition. The squad is developing into an exciting team able to move the ball and find space. We have been fortunate enough to be able to field a B team most weeks, with the squad drawing trice and then beating Stonyhust in their last game.

The rugby programme continues to develop in the second half of the season, training at our local club Fylde RFC and look forward to our continued participation in the Lancashire and National competitions.
