The 2022 Year 10 iteration of this well-established AKS competition took place during the third week of November, with Leighton facing off against Samlesbury in one semi-final duel, whilst Rufford confronted Gawthorpe in the other; fierce spelling frenzy then generated Friday’s final pairing of Rufford and Samlesbury, with the former emerging as winners following a heated and tight final round.
Year 10 proved more than a match for some particularly tough vocabulary: xenophobia, yacht, zealot, and sacrilegious all met their match, along with vivacious, vigorous, veterinary and ukelele. Participants are to be commended for their spelling skill, the air of spirited competition, willingness to be involved, and tenacity – well done to all Houses, and thanks, too, to the intrigued members of the daily audiences for attending and for helping create three super lunchtime occasions.
Semi-finals
Samlesbury 40-37 Leighton
Rufford 49-20 Gawthorpe
Final
Rufford 36-32 Samlesbury
