Farewell to John Hare

Farewell to John Hare

PUBLISHED 17 March 2022

John was a very dear gentleman, gentle and quietly spoken, with strong principles borne of his lifelong Christian faith. He was modest and relatively slight in stature, but a great human being. He combined diligence with intelligence and impressed me with his ability to adapt to new technology, keep up with current affairs and to cook and bake for himself until relatively recently. His memory of schooldays, his wartime experience and beyond remained remarkably sharp and we were privileged that he was so generous in sharing those memories with some of the pupils at school and for our archive projects. It was our first archive exhibition in 2016 which brought John back into the 'fold' at AKS and it was clear that he was delighted to be included in some of the school's musical events and, most importantly, the Remembrance Day Service.

With John's passing, we have lost our oldest known KES alumnus and our last living link with his classmates memorialised in the school hall. John and his elder brother, Henry, were both pupils at KES, as were John's two sons, Nigel and David.
