Last Wednesday saw the heats of the Inter-Schools’ competition, Schools’ Challenge, based (as its title suggests) on its big brother ‘University Challenge’ – with the exception that in the schools’ version you can steal questions your opponent got wrong. Fastest finger on the buzzer wins the round for their school. Two AKS teams (comprising two sixth formers and two younger students) were ready for cerebral and phalangeal action after travelling to Bury Grammar School for our mini-leagues.

Our A-team (Miranda A, Meghna S, Olivia M, and Sam C) gave a good account of themselves against Stockport GS – winning their game comfortably – but found Oldham Hulme B and Bury C to be more difficult opponents and were consequently unlucky enough not to go through. Tightly-fought games for our B team (Eve H., Jack H., Ben B. and Keira K.) against tough opposition saw them through to the plate semi-final. Here we lost to Cheadle Hulme in an interesting and well-fought match. We were not ashamed to have been beaten by a good team, who themselves fell at the next hurdle.

If I may quote, Mr Hone the regional organiser: ‘the Plate Final was the battle of the Hulmes, with Oldham prevailing over a spirited Cheadle team by 420 points to 340’.

Our teams enjoyed meeting people from other schools and the subsequent race for the buzzer and the search for that tip-of-the-tongue answer.  I thank my colleague Mr Bridges, for all his help in running the trip.

Quiz Club meets on Wednesdays and anyone in any year group is welcome.
