In Year 5 we have been learning all about the fascinating country that we live in and how it’s organised into countries, counties, regions, cities and towns. The children can now explain the difference between a town and a city before going on to locate some of the UK’s major cities and capitals on a map and where they are in relation to one another.
During this term we have looked at the human and physical features of the UK, such as population, tallest mountains, coastlines, rivers and famous landmarks to name a few! The children are now able to explain the difference between hills and mountains and further explain how they are formed.
Year 5 then went on to explore Britain’s coastline and the seas and oceans that surround the UK. They have been able to adopt a wide range of geographical vocabulary to describe key features and facts. The children have been able to research the journey of a river, from source to mouth, as well as identify some of the major rivers within the UK.
Finally, a joint classwork/homework project was set to explore a particular UK city in detail. Every child within the year group was given a different city to research, with the task of creating a short informative ‘mini teach’ session to present to their classmates.
This week, the children have been busy delivering their individual presentations supported with a wide range of quality resources, to include power-points, posters, quizzes and games broadening their knowledge and understanding. Make sure you take the opportunity to view our wonderful display outside 5A and 5W classrooms and learn all about our wonderful Great Britain!
