Sixth Form End of Year Report

PUBLISHED 12 July 2020

Mr Kevin Maund, Head of Sixth Form

AKS Sixth Form exists at such a frenetic pace that I am continually amazed as to how much has been achieved in one year, from students in both Lower and Upper Sixth.

This year’s guest speaker programme has offered students crucial guidance in their current studies and beyond into higher education, degree apprenticeships and the world of professional work. At the beginning of the year, members of the Class of 2019 returned to offer their advice regarding sixth form study and making the most of the opportunities available. Speakers from Lancaster University, Northumbria University, Harper Adams University and the University of Oxford have focused on a range of subjects such as interview techniques, budgeting and competitive applications.

Alongside their academic studies, the students continue to be the driving force of our whole school cocurricular programme with many of them assuming leadership roles in sport, performing arts and within the Prep School as reading mentors. I am delighted to see the student-created mental health programme Vent find new leaders in the new intake of sixth form students for September. I would also like to pay thanks to this year’s excellent Sixth Form Student Leadership Team for their unwavering professionalism and inspiration this year, with specific mention to Head Girl, Sally and Head Boy, Ben.

Our membership of the international organization Round Square provides a catalyst for students to take an active role in our local community whilst recognising their place within an interconnected global community. This year students had the remarkable experience of travelling to India to take part in this year’s Round Square International Conference.

If AKS Sixth Form had an unofficial motto it would be “work hard, play harder” as the sense of fun, energy (and yes at times mischief) infuse the building. Meals out, theatre trips, bake offs, movie nights and, under the purview of lockdown, Skype quizzes have kept our community together and friends connected.

The above is only a fraction of sixth form life at AKS. I would like to thank all our sixth form students for making it an absolute pleasure to come into work every day.
