The loyalty and commitment of a former teacher at King Edward VII Junior School in Lytham have been praised following her recent death at Portishead near Bristol.
Dorothy Adams, a Mathematician, taught at the Lytham school from 1971 to 1989 and, after her retirement, she and her husband Alan continued to support many school events, especially sport, plays and concerts. Dorothy and Alan moved to Somerset in 1997 to be nearer her daughter Sarah and her family.
Dorothy’s three children all attended King Edward and Queen Mary Schools. Sarah, the eldest, went on to be a modern languages teacher, Nigel became a doctor, now working as a GP in West Sussex and Tim is an IT specialist now living with his family in the USA following his marriage to an American girl.
John Rice former Head of King Edward’s Juniors remembers Dorothy as a hard-working, ever- cheerful and committed member of his staff, always popular with her colleagues.
As well as loving her role as a teacher, Dorothy delighted in being creative and built up a wonderful wardrobe of costumes for the Junior School plays.
Julian Wilde who became Head of King Edward’s in 1993 recalls the warm welcome to the School which he received from Dorothy on their first meeting.
Mrs. Adams died, aged 91, on December 8th. Her funeral will be at 12 noon on Wednesday 30 December at her own church, St. Peter’s, in Portishead. Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Mother’s Union via FH Halliday and Son, Portishead.
