Talented AKS Year 10 pupil Anya J is celebrating being selected as a member of the 2021 England U16 Hockey Squad after a long and extensive selection process which involved numerous zoom meetings and presentations during the national lockdown plus many assessment days all over the country. Anya continues the AKS tradition of producing international hockey players and follows in the footsteps of ex-pupil Mollie Mason, who now plays for the Great Britain U23 development Squad, who also started her international journey with U16 selection. Even more impressive is the fact that Anya is one of the youngest in the squad and one of only 3 GK’s.

Anya’s huge potential as a talented young Goalkeeper was recognised by AKS teacher and England GK Coach Kay Hanham last year when she was invited to join the England Hockey Performance Centre based at Fylde HC. Since then Anya has put in a lot of extra training both on the pitch at technical shaping sessions and off the pitch in the gym and now has the reward of international selection. Anya now embarks on a series of training camps over the coming months before pulling on her England shirt for the first time in proposed international matches against Scotland and Wales in July.

Anya plays her club hockey at Fylde Hockey Club and having taken a huge step up onto the international ladder she has the ambition to continue to develop and improve and hopefully look forward to a long and successful international career.
