AKS Achieves: Summer Tutoring Programme

PUBLISHED 02 August 2021

Our new AKS Achieves Summer Tutoring Programme got off to a flying start last week, with each morning beginning with a puzzle for the children to solve, before literacy and numeracy break-out groups.

The literacy sessions focused on covering grammatical features and guided writing and independent pieces.  In KS2, we worked on Macbeth, rewrote the witches spell, looked at what soliloquys are and identified archaic language.

In numeracy, the children worked hard to improve their reasoning and problem-solving strategies and techniques. They applied their knowledge of mathematic concepts and theory to a variety of every-day situations to solve problems.

Together, we unpicked some very challenging questions and used bar method as a key tool to help them map out their understanding and make sense of the information given. This helped the children realise that the goal isn't to be 'the cleverest' or 'fastest' when learning to problem solve, but being able to understand the question and devise a suitable strategic plan of attack. We had lots of fun looking at a wide range of scenarios involving the children from Eli’s and Freddie’s sandwich business to Hamna’s and Charlie’s cartoned juice franchise. They even worked backwards, drawing diagrams and tables, recognising patterns and in some cases even acting it out! Resilience, competitiveness and confidence reached new heights.

The afternoons were filled with scientific exploration and inquisitiveness, creating solar panel cars, grown crystals, learnt about the solar system, coded using MircoBit and created our own weather station, which we then used to act out being meteorologists using our green screen.

The programme will run again on the 9th of August for KS1 and the 16th for KS2.  We will have a few days focusing on Round Square and working with the community and beyond.

There are still places available for AKS pupils, if you are interested, please sign up on the hyperlinks below.
