Year 6 Heart Dissection with Dr Carey

PUBLISHED 12 April 2024

Year 6 Science kicked off with a burst of excitement this week as our Prep pupils welcomed the return of Dr. Carey! In their exploration of “Healthy Bodies,” they embarked on a remarkable journey: dissecting a pig’s heart. While this hands-on experience is typically reserved for senior school, our enthusiastic young learners eagerly rolled up their sleeves and dove right in.

Equipped with surgical gloves, aprons, trays, and scissors, the kids delved into their planned dissection. Their goal? To deepen their understanding of how blood circulates through the body via the heart and to unravel the mysteries of this incredible organ. As they held the hearts in their hands, they closely examined the intricate ventricles, veins, and arteries.

During the dissection, they made fascinating discoveries about the heart’s four chambers and how they collaboratively pump oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. Before opening the heart to explore its internal structure, they astutely noted a significant difference between the left and right sides.

Despite the occasional graphic nature of the activity, the students fearlessly explored the chambers and vessels with their fingers, discussing their findings along the way. Arabella, beaming with pride, was incredibly excited to collaborate with her father, Dr. Carey, during the investigation. Their curiosity and maturity shone through during the 45-minute Q&A session that followed the practical lesson. We extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Carey for dedicating an entire morning to deliver this inspiring masterclass.  It’s no exaggeration to say that our Prep School now boasts some budding physiologists! What an engaging and educational experience for these young scientists!
