AKS U15 Girls football squad travelled across to Stockport Grammar School for the first round of the ISFA Cup, looking to defend their ISFA Shield title, which they won last year or go even better and fight for the cup.
Facing such a large school in the first round was certainly a good test for the girls and tested they most certainly were, in all areas of the pitch. Starting slowly, Stockport allowed AKS to find their feet in the match through passive defending and hesitancy when in possession and this time on the ball was well received as AKS started to build confidence and momentum as the first half progressed. Against the run of play, however Stockport managed to squeeze the ball over the line to go 1-0 up. The lead however did not last long. 3 quick goals from AKS saw the team go into half time with a strong and well deserved 3 - 1 lead.
Turning round in the second half AKS faced a strong wind and a much stronger opposition as Stockport clearly decided to shoot at every opportunity. After a lot of possession two second half Stockport goals levelled things and at the final whistle the scores were still level. Extra time could not separate the teams and so the result was to be decided on penalties.
Going into penalties AKS felt confident in scoring theirs but it was Anna V, who was making her debut in goal, who truly stepped up, saving two Stockport penalties in superb fashion and AKS scoring all of theirs. AKS progress to the second round, full of confidence having beaten a strong and talented Stockport side.
Player of the match went to Sophie S for her energy and drive in both attack and defence. Mentions should also go to Maisie W and Olivia D playing a year up but showing how dangerous they both are with the ball at their feet.
