Senior School Shortlisted for Independent School of the Year: Outstanding New Initiative

PUBLISHED 26 July 2023

We're delighted to announce that our Inquiry Learning initiative, using the FOSIL framework has been shortlisted for the 'Outstanding New Initiative' category in this year's Independent Schools of the Year Awards (winners announced in November). It is fantastic to receive this national recognition by having two* of our initiatives in the final twelve out of the thousands of entries.

Whilst it is superb to be recognised in this way, the most satisfaction is derived from seeing our students step up to the challenge and become truly absorbed by their chosen research topics. We celebrate them in our annual Evening of Inquiry, which is one of the stand-out events in our academic calendar, with David Harrow, Headmaster, commenting of the experience, “There are few evenings where I learn more or realise I know less.” A parent of a Year 12 Scholar provided the following feedback: “I just wanted to say how impressed I was with the students’ presentations, background knowledge and confidence when talking about their inquiry projects. It was truly an enjoyable evening."

When considering the wider ramifications of the research process, Faye Marland, Assistant Head (Staff and Student Development) explained, “Whilst the poster celebrates their achievements and every student should be very proud of what they have achieved, it is the process itself that teaches us more about ourselves. It has required hard work and discipline, as well as a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. Students have grown to understand the high standards we expect of them and what can be achieved if they are only made to see their true potential.”

Head of Inquiry Learning, Nick O'Loughlin concluded, "Inquiry Projects and the use of FOSIL has signalled our emphasis on academic enrichment, challenge and learning beyond the classroom, reinforced by other initiatives, such as our Scholars Programme and weekly Reflection Section sessions. This underpins our aspirations for our students to pursue their passions, achieve their ambitions and ultimately, change their worlds."
