In what is turning out to be a memorable term for hockey at AKS the U16 team continued the impressive performances by finishing runners-up in the North West Indoor finals missing a place in the National Finals by just one last minute goal!
An inexperienced AKS team took to the court for their first competitive indoor match of the year against a strong Queen’s School from Chester and understandably had to soak up a lot of pressure in the opening encounters. Queens used the boards well to create chances and only great goalkeeping from Anya J early on kept the scores level. As the game progressed we started to get to grips with the subtleties of the indoor game and created some chances of our own but the Queens keeper was also on form to save our best efforts. Queens did find the net before half time and went into the break with their noses ahead at 1 - 0.
Learning and improving as the game progressed we gained in confidence and started to play some superb indoor hockey. Charlotte T, Lucy B, Olivia M and Carly W linked well to dominate down the right and put the Queens defence under pressure and we deservedly drew level thanks to a goal from Carly W to make it 1 – 1. Great low defending by Jessia A, Beth R, Lisa P, Lucy B and Olivia M made it difficult for Queens to find the net and when they did get efforts away great keeping from Anya J kept the scores level. Laura K used her skills well up front to create chances and Carly W was a constant threat but late in the game a lucky deflection saw the ball find its way past Anya and into the net to make the final score 1 – 2.
The second game saw us really step up our game against Cheadle Hulme and with great indoor play we went into an early lead as Carly W found the net in just the second minute. Carly added a second minutes later and with all players gaining both confidence and experience, using the boards to good effect to move the ball forward, we dominated play and went into the break 2 – 0 ahead. The second half saw us demonstrate the huge potential of the team as we played superb indoor hockey and created chance after chance. Carly W added a further two goals to make her game tally to 4 and a brace from both Charlotte T and Beth R made the final score an impressive 8 – 1!
The team finished the tournament on a high and able to boast being the second best team in the North West but there was also a little disappointment that they were not heading to the National Finals having lost out by just a single goal!
Overall a superb effort which saw everyone learn and improve and certainly bodes well for the next indoor matches.
