Lights, Camera, Action . . .

A few weeks ago, the principal cast  from this year’s school musical, The Addams Family spent the afternoon at Lytham Hall filming the shows promotional video.

As the Addams Family aren’t an average family (they're more spooky then stereotypical), the supposedly haunted Lytham Hall made for the perfect backdrop. In fact some members of the cast believed they even saw a spiritual presence on set, in the form of a lamp shade moving of its own accord. Despite the scary occurrences it was a fantastic opportunity to learn all about working with cameras and acting for screen.

Hair and make-up complete and costumes on we were ready for Miss Worthington to call action and for Mr McVite to hit record. Scenes were filmed in order of location and those staged outside were shot first in daylight. The next to be filmed were the group shots. I particularly enjoyed working on the dining room scene, in which the Addams family and the Beineke family sat down to enjoy a family meal. Although we had free reign of the hall, we had to be careful in the dining room as the table was laden with many precious antiques.

For the individual frames each character in the Addams family had a set location in the hall which acted as our family home. For Lurch we see him in full butler mode walking down the grand staircase, Pugsley is up to no good in the playroom, Wednesday sits grooming herself at her dressing table and Morticia and Gomez share a loving embrace in the longue. I, as Grandma, was in Lytham Hall's artefact room, reading an ancient spell book.

I also enjoyed discovering all the details that go into to make a video. From storyboards to call sheets and from the different camera angles to the use of additional lighting – it’s a very in-depth process. It’s quite exciting too because we are currently also learning about acting for screen and filmmaking in our Drama lessons.
