AKS Lytham - GCSE Results

PUBLISHED 20 August 2020

The strong tradition of academic performance continued at AKS this year with students well-prepared for Sixth Form.

Head of Middle School, Phill Rudd said, "I’m proud of the way our students have responded to the challenges presented by COVID-19. Our students’ hard work and dedication will give them a strong foundation for their A levels. I’m proud, not just of their achievements, but the maturity and tenacity they have shown in recent months.”

This year 58% of all grades were 9-7 (equivalent to A*/A). These results reflect the growing recognition of the positive impact that experiences gained out of the classroom have on academic results. Examples include: Meghna, nine 9s and 9 in Further Maths, who is also a ATCL Diploma pianist and talented flautist, with a Gold Medal for Verse and Prose (LAMDA), Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and national finalist in the French Spelling Bee; Mia, nine 9s and 8 in Further Maths, Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award, represents the school for both hockey and netball, in addition to fundraising for Médecins Sans Frontières in Yemen with AKS Action; Alicia, seven 9s and one 8, talented musician and multiple instrumentalist, playing violin, piano, guitar and saxophone, in addition to being a member of the choir, chamber choir and featuring in numerous ensembles; Christopher, six 9s, three 8s and 9 in Further Maths, CCF cadet, representing the school in rugby and the Maths Challenge team, Fylde RFU, Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award; Tristan, four 9s, four 8s, one 6 and 6 in Further Maths, England Rugby Academy, Lancashire Captain, Sale Sharks Academy, Lytham Cricket Club volunteer coach, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award; as well as participating in the Maths Challenge team and CCF.

More broadly, 65% of our GCSE students participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards; with others holding county and national honours across a variety of sports. Character education is a hallmark of AKS and over the past year has included trips to India and Nepal - Toby (seven 9s, two 8s and 8 in Further Maths) attended the latter in addition to gaining county honours for rugby and his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Headmaster David Harrow commented, Behind every name, and behind every grade, sits an individual story, and we are proud to celebrate all that they bring to the community of the school, through sport, drama, music, service and so many other facets of their lives, especially in the context in which we now find ourselves. Much of what they have achieved cannot be measured, but it is just as valuable, and will enable every student not just to thrive in their own futures, but to make a tangible and positive difference that goes far beyond school.’

Head of Sixth Form, Kevin Maund added, “Despite the unprecedented challenges faced, our students have got off to a flying start by completing our bespoke Pre-A level Programme in June. I’m looking forward to seeing them build on this success by capitalising on the opportunities and academic rigour provided in AKS Sixth Form.”
