GCSE and A level Tea Time Concert

PUBLISHED 13 March 2024

This year's GCSE and A level Tea Time concert was notable for several reasons - not only did it showcase jaw-dropping performances, whetting our appetites for the AKS Cabaret (next Thursday in the OAKS Hall), but also because it included several students who are not taking GCSE or A level music, but who were keen to perform for their family and friends.

Whilst AKS Performing Arts is renowned for growing exceptional talent, the level of participation in not only learning instruments, but wishing to perform gives an indication of the culture in the department. As does the typically eclectic mix, where, in the words of Mr Hodgkinson, Director of Performing Arts, "It's only at AKS that Verdi can be followed by heavy metal" - making reference to the sublime operatic piece expertly sung by Sammy C being followed by Vishal S impressing with his rendition of Tiberius on the electric guitar (after just one year of lessons!); elsewhere in the programme, Pink Floyd followed Scott Joplin.

Students working for and beyond Grade 8/Diplomas performed alongside those like Charlie W, who has only been playing for two years, yet is already mastering Grade 4 pieces. After being treated to a range of piano, voice, guitar, drum and saxophone solos, Alex W ended the concert with the stunning, 'Someone Like You' by Frank Wildhorn.

Congratulations to all who took part. Whilst this was an informal 'practice' concert prior to your exams, the audience thoroughly enjoyed hearing you perform!
