The large AKS U14 hockey squad finished the Autumn term unbeaten with a win against local rivals Lytham High School. 22 members of the squad took to the field for the last game of the term and everyone showed how they have developed both their individual skills and game understanding over the weeks.

We started the match on the front foot taking the game to Lytham with Captain for the day Amelia H dominating in the middle of the pitch to put the Lytham defence under pressure and we soon won our first corner of the game. Charlotte L’s shot was well saved by the Lytham keeper but Poppy M was on the right post to direct the ball into the goal and take us into the lead. Great team play on the right from Ella A, Lola H and Charlotte L saw us dominate and attack at pace but good Lytham defence kept the score to just one until the 15th minute when a great individual goal from Amelia H made it 2 – 0.  Emelie B guided the defenders in front of her well and good positioning and tackling from the entire defence saw us thwart the Lytham attacks and maintain our lead.

In the second period of the match we played some great hockey switching the point of attack well and enjoying the lion’s share of possession. Esther T replaced Amelia in the centre of the pitch and she also dominated and switched play well. We were rewarded for our possession with lots of scoring opportunities and a brace of goals from Charlotte L made the score 4 – 0.

The final period of the game saw Lytham enjoy possession of their own but more good tackling from Sophia M, Zena R-O and Erin R made it difficult for the Lytham forwards to create many scoring opportunities. A great strike from Charlotte L which was flying just wide of the goal found Grace P in a perfect position on the left post and her superb touch saw the ball deflect in to the goal to make it 5 – 0.  Late in the game Lytham did get on to the score sheet and at the final whistle the score was 5 – 1 to AKS.

A great final match with all the large squad getting an opportunity to play and everyone contributing to the team performance and final win. Players of the match were Charlotte L for her dominant play down the right and Emelie B for her communication and supportive role at the back.
