Common Sense Club Thrives with Practical Life Lessons

PUBLISHED 11 December 2024

The Common Sense Club celebrated a proud milestone last week as Tom, a dedicated member who has attended every session since September, led his first session! Tom guided pupils through the importance of understanding food labels and nutritional values, hosting an engaging, hands-on activity that explored what these details mean for everyday choices. His confident leadership and practical approach inspired his peers, demonstrating how the club empowers pupils to not only learn but also teach and share valuable skills. Bravo, Tom!

Since half term, the Common Sense Club has gone from strength to strength, equipping pupils with practical skills that extend beyond the classroom. With engaging, hands-on sessions led by enthusiastic staff, pupils have relished the opportunity to gain valuable life lessons in a supportive environment.

In the first session, Mrs Hobson-Woodhead and Mr Kedwell tackled the critical topic of fire safety, teaching pupils how to confidently use a fire extinguisher. This vital skill, paired with discussions on safety protocols, left pupils feeling prepared for emergencies.

The following week, Mrs Yellend demonstrated the art of shoe polishing, highlighting the importance of maintaining a polished appearance. Pupils practised this timeless skill while learning how it reflects attention to detail and personal pride.

Next, Mr Hayden shared his expertise in tying ties, specifically the elegant Windsor knot. Pupils diligently practised the technique, mastering a skill that will serve them well in formal and professional settings.

Following this, Mr Donovan led an inspiring session on sign language, teaching pupils the basics and the A-Z alphabet. He challenged them to sign their names by the end, sparking enthusiasm and fostering new communication skills.

Tom led another session this week on the basics of chess, which engaged pupils in a fun and strategic learning session. Next week, we look forward to a session on following instructions when building flat-pack furniture, offering another practical lesson in problem-solving and patience.

The Common Sense Club has become a favourite weekly activity, equipping pupils with real-world knowledge and boosting their confidence. With more exciting sessions ahead, it’s clear this initiative is helping pupils prepare for adulthood—one practical skill at a time!
