We Shall Remember Them
This morning the school fell silent to mark the 100th Armistice Day since World War One to commemorate those who died in conflict. It is the centenary of the first two-minute silence, held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
The school has participated in several Remembrance events over the weekend, culminating in today’s moving and powerful Remembrance Service, where we recognised and paid tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Sunday saw the CCF Parade to the War Memorial at St Annes-on -Sea whilst in Lytham, representatives of the Prep and Senior School laid wreaths, accompanied by the sounds of the choir who performed as part of the Service.
Sunday afternoon saw the CCF parade further at Fylde Rugby Club where they assisted at the Fylde XV v RAF XV Commemorative Match.
Outside the Hall, Mrs Burke and the Design Department have created a 3D Poppy Installation entitled “Remembering At AKS” where Year 8 have designed individual poppies which hang from the ceiling in a powerful visual symbol of remembrance.
Monday saw the School Remembrance Service where particular tribute was paid to those Old Arnoldians and Old Lidunians who fell in the Two World Wars. Following a moving address by the Headmaster, wreaths were laid by: the CCF, the School, the Old Arnoldians, the Old Lidunians, and the Queen Mary School Association; whilst the names of the fallen were read aloud.
With beautiful accompaniment by the choir and the haunting lament of the bagpipes, the school and the assembled guests took time to pay their respects and ensure that “We shall remember them”.
