A fabulous day of rugby for all involved!

Despite the recent inclement weather, AKS played host for the annual Nora Lipscombe U13s Sevens Tournament and U15s Sevens competition this week.  There were 30 teams from across some of the top rugby playing schools in the North West playing across the two competitions, involving over 360 students playing rugby over the two competitions.

The success of the competition on the field was aided by the support of three OAKS (AKS alumni), who helped referee the event.  Namely Fylde 1st XV players, Matt Garrod, and Tom Forster alongside Premiership player Laura Perrin, who is playing for Waterloo Ladies 1st XV.  Alongside them we had 5 sixth form students helping to run and referee the competitions.

Following the group stage of the U13’s competition Manchester Grammar, Lancaster Royal Grammar, King Williams and St Marys Hall all progressed in to the Cup, with St Marys Hall topping the group following some strongly contested matches.

In the Trophy competition Merchant Taylors topped the group with Wirral Grammar coming as runners up. In the Plate competition Hutton came first ahead of St Mary’s Crosby. Finally, in the Bowl competition, Kirkham with Bolton School runners up.

In the U15s competition Birkenhead Grammar, Kirkham, Stockport Grammar and Wirral Grammar progressed in to the Cup, with Stockport Winning group with Kirkham in close second.

In the Trophy competition Manchester Grammar topped the group with St.Marys Crosby finishing as runners up. In the Plate competition Stonyhurst came first ahead of AKS runners up. Finally, in the Bowl competition Giggleswick won and Lancaster RGS runners up.

Over all this was a wonderful day and a great experience for all students involved.

Reflecting on the tournaments Mr Walmsley, Director of Sport, said “I was immensely impressed by the level of the performance from all of the schools involved.  This has served as a reminder of the hot bed of rugby talent we have across the North West.  Well done to the cup winners St.Marys Hall in the U13s and Stockport Grammar in the U15s competition."
