Following their recent successes, the U11 girls’ hockey squad set off for Manchester High School for Girls in buoyant mood. Their first group match was against recent rivals, Kings Macclesfield. The team was focussed and quickly took the lead through Lucy with accurate passing and teamwork. Another goal shortly after from Anna disheartened Kings and they struggled to get into the game. More goals followed, a second from Lucy, Camilla finished well, and Ruby completed the scoring with a brace.
The next game was against the hosts, MGHS, and once again the girls dominated from the start and were comfortable 4 nil win with goals from Lucy (2), Ruby and Camilla. The match against Thornhill allowed the girls to try different positions which was a challenge. Gracie coming close to scoring on several occasions but another goal from Camilla secured victory and qualification into the semi-finals.
The semi-finals pitted AKS against local rivals Kirkham. The passing and movement were exceptional all game. The play built up from the back from Georgia, down the wing to Anna and across to Ruby, who finished with precision characterised many goals. Lucy grabbed another couple of goals and Esther ventured forward to finish off 2 short corners and secure an emphatic win.
The final was against Kings Macc again. They battled hard but the defence especially Sophia and Esther had the measure of their forwards. Niamh, in goal was a spectator for the game, touching the ball only once. Lucy scored all four goals in a one-sided game, controlling the ball and place it inside the far post each time.
AKS were rightly crowned North West Champions and travel to Leeds next Thursday for the North Finals. Just reward for the squad’s determination and teamwork throughout the season.
