AKS Prep School celebrating success of students for second year running

Prep School are celebrating having made the final of United Learning's national StorySLAM competition for the second year in a row with Samuel (Y6)'s short story, 'Clay Robinson'.

The competition was held entirely virtually for the first time this year, attracting the highest number of entrants, with over 1000 pupils taking part across 20 primary schools. The judges met online and this year included Sarah Holding, full-time author of “SeaBEAN, The Trilogy” and “CHAMELEON”; Neal Zetter, London-based poet and author and who runs the Confidence in Communication through Comedy Poetry workshops; Stuart Bird, Writer In Residence at Surbiton High School; Karen Tulloch, United Learning Primary English Advisor; and Jennifer Reynolds, United Learning Primary English Advisor. After much deliberation, they chose the three overall winners, who were celebrated on Twitter.

The judges really enjoyed Samuel’s story, commenting, "it was very engaging and were all surprised by the twist at the end. We particularly enjoyed the imagery and some of their favourite lines included, ‘those ocean eyes have now been polluted with sadness’, ‘he’s numb and he travels the world alone’ and ‘teeth like tombstones in his rigid mouth’. We thought the story was very cleverly written and the character of Clay Robinson had been really well thought out".

You can watch Samuel read his story here.
