6 teams enjoy close, exciting rounders matches against Rossall

PUBLISHED 15 June 2021

It was another superb morning of sport as 6 girls rounders team teams took to the field in a return fixture against Rossall and there were again some exciting and close fought matches.

The Year 10 had a high scoring game with some great hitting from both teams. AKS eventually won 24.5 - 19.5 but it was closer than the score suggests with just one rounder separating the teams after the first innings. AKS started off well with some excellent batting in the first innings especially from hard hitting Player of the Match Olivia M who scored most of our 11.5 rounders! Rossall’s first innings saw them determined to keep up and they took their scoring opportunities where they could to reach 10.5 rounders after an innings each.  AKS dominated the second innings with excellent batting, hitting the ball hard and into spaces to score a further 13 rounders and set Rossall a challenging target of 25 rounders to win. Excellent fielding, especially from Beth R, saw great covering and supporting each other and we made it difficult for Rossall to get any rhythm to their innings, limiting the total to 19.5 rounders to secure an excellent victory.

The U14 side fielded first and some great bowling from Charlotte T made it difficult for the Rossall players to get any power on their hits and hence they struggled to score. Great work at backstop from Carley W and covering by Jessica A also limited their scoring opportunities and at the end of their innings Rossall had scored 3.5 rounders.AKS started their batting innings well with Charlotte T and Pryanka R scoring half rounders and great hitting by Jessica A , Jessie A and Charlotte T  added further rounders and at the break AKS were 3 rounders ahead. A great second half fielding display from all the team saw AKS limit Rossall to 4 rounders in their second innings setting AKS a target of just a rounder to win. However a much improved fielding performance from Rossall made scoring opportunities difficult but with Charlotte Tagain scoring rounders and others contributing half rounders we finished the game with 11 rounders and a good win. Player of the Match was Katie S for her excellent fielding on 2nd base and Charlotte T for her excellent bowling and scoring hits.

The U13A team were in another thrilling game beating Rossall by just one rounders 19.5 – 18.5. AKS found themselves behind after the first batting innings 8.5 to 11.5. In the second innings AKS put pressure on a strong Rossall batting team with 3 fantastic catches from Lisa P at backstop to dismiss some of their top hitters. Great outfielding from Maddie A with her massive throwing arm from deep fielding also limited the Rossall scoring and AKS were set a target of 19 to win. In the second innings Eve C stepped up scoring 4 rounders with big well placed hitting and tactical running which won her the player of the match award and at the end of the match AKS had scored 19.5 to clinch victory.

The U13B team also came out on top winning 16 – 11.5 having to fight back from a deficit at the half way point. Good batting from Rossall saw them take a slender 1.5 rounder lead into the second innings but AKS all stepped up in the second half and made great improvements with both the bat and in the field to clinch the win.

When batting, pressured running in 2nd half between the posts caused Rossall to panic and forced fielding errors, resulting in AKS scoring half rounders and at times leading to a full rounder. AKS fielding also improved covering the gaps between posts and getting behind the ball in deep field. Accurate throwing to posts, a good backstop and 2nd base partnership between Eleanor J and Connie S   limited the Rossall scoring chances as did great catches from Georgia L ,Lucy T and Freya E. Rounders scored by Charlotte C, Lucy T, Freya E, Evangeline D and Lara Kr kept the scoreboard moving along and at the end of the game AKS had their third win.  Rossall voted Georgia L Player of the Match but all the team deserve credit for a good all-round performance.

The Year 7 games against Rossall proved to be as close as the last occasion the two teams met but this time it was Rossall who snatched the win. The A team game saw lots of rounders being scored despite some excellent fielding from both teams. There was strong batting from Hannah A, Esther T and Sophia M for AKS and the score after the first innings was 9 – 8.5 to Rossall. AKS struggled to score as well in second innings and Rossall went into bat needing 6.5 to win. Rossall started the final innings well with three rounders in quick succession but AKS managed to contain them. The last five minutes saw Rossall go for the win and some big hitting saw them clinch the game at the end. The final score was Rossall 17.5 to AKS 15.5. Player of the match was Hannah A for her clever and tactical awareness of where to place her hits.

The B team game saw AKS go into the second half of the game with a 7-6 lead but good fielding from Rossall saw AKS lose two of their strongest batsmen early on and struggle to increase their lead as convincingly as they needed. In the end they could only increase their final batting tally to 12.5. With Rossall chasing a not impossible task to level the score it was a tense second innings as the opposition crept slowly towards their target. With the scores level, Rossall’s final batsman became the hero of the hour scoring half rounder to win the game with a well placed shot. The AKS team fielded well and it was especially pleasing to see bowler Rosie L and second base Georgia S link so well to prevent half rounders. Player of the match was Lilly G who controlled the play at backstop and was our strongest batter on the day.
