Just Good Friends Games Night

PUBLISHED 13 November 2023

This is the third occasion this award-winning night has been staged with the AKS group ‘Bring me Sunshine’ taking over the running of the event. Held in the Sixth Form Centre we must be close to capacity now which leads me to thinking about booking the OAKS Hall out for next year.  Games Night is a series of family friendly parlour games, nearly all of them alien to the urbane, tech-savvy teenager. As ever, the night got started with a fiendishly frustrating ‘Beetle Drive’ and the fast growing favourite of ‘Sevens’.

A highlight of these evenings has always been ‘Name that Tune’. This is done live by one of the talented musicians in the sixth form. Year 12 student Hugo played a delightful round on the saxophone – a real show-stopper and brilliantly done. ‘Play Your Cards Right’ has never been more cruel with 3 teams failing at the last hurdle, the mantra remains true “nothing for a pair…..” Then onto reverse bingo and prize bingo with Jean, who attends all of the JGF school events, delighted with her bottle of pink champagne house prize. The night finished with a raffle and tribute must be paid to the incredibly generous donations of friends, staff, parents and local businesses alike.

Its so nice to hear the positive comments of AKS and their work with JGF in combatting loneliness and isolation in the local community and many donate readily, but, special mention must go to Bosco of Lytham, Snapes of Freckleton, Butchers, Funny Girls of Blackpool and Kelly Akers Photography. Some have donated every year, and many people have now attended all 3 events, maybe they haven’t realised my jokes remain the same. The generosity of spirit of giving of time, giving prizes, buying tickets even though some knew they couldn’t attend, and then spending on the night was much appreciated and if I’m honest quite humbling.

A very entertaining evening was only our first aim, the second was to fund events throughout this academic year, especially  a Christmas party on the 22nd November. Yes I know Christmas seems to come earlier every year but we look forward to welcoming 90 members of JGF into school, fancy afternoon teas have been ordered, Christmas crackers have already been bought, pass the parcel is ready to go, along with crowd favourite ‘Play Your Cards Right’ and prize bingo and other live entertainment. Bring Me Sunshine and myself very much look forward to it.
