Peter Jones’ Tycoons is an international competition that allows young people to set up and run their first business. AKS Sixth Form encourages students to participate in this.
“Every participating team writes a business plan, is lent money, starts a business and trades, competing with other student companies through a sophisticated kick-starter style platform, in a safe and controlled environment.”
Here's what one group, called "Christmas Crusaders", have to say about their experience so far:
We are a group of Sixth Formers (Daniel, Alfie, Jasper, James and Stan) who have set up the Christmas Crusaders, to compete alongside our peers, in the Tycoons competition. So far we have had great fun, whilst learning so much and realise what an incredible opportunity this is for us all to be able to participate in. We have produced some beautiful Christmas goods, made mainly through recycled items:
- Our glass candle decorations were created with old reused wood, including a damaged door, which was cut using a scroll saw and a router to cut the circles out for the bottles and domes.
- Some of our shot glass paddles were created using an unwanted old chair and we used a pillar drill for cutting the shot glass holes.
- Our reindeer were created from small pieces of wood using hand saws and pillar drills.
All production was supervised by Daniel’s dad, John in his garden workshop.
After making the products, we had to decide on pricing. We also had to create a logo and decide on a charity for the profits to go to and we chose: a Northwest charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide.
We now have to market our products at events, through Instagram and word of mouth.
We were very careful in spending the minimum amount of money to create our products, so we obtain the maximum amount of profit to give to our chosen charity. Most of our resources were reused materials.
We will be selling our products at AKS Sixth Form Open Evening this Thursday 9th November, Just Good Friends Games Night on Friday 10th November, at the PTA Christmas Fair on Saturday 9th December and at various other events.
