Back in February, Turkey and Syria were hit by a series of earthquakes that have devastated the lives of thousands of people. 7 weeks on, people are still searching for their loved ones. The death toll continues to rise and now stands at over 55000 people. There are no official figures on how many people are missing, however, nearly 2,000 unaccompanied children have been rescued from under the rubble and registered with the authorities.

DEC charities are continuing to work in Turkey and Northern Syria to support those affected by the earthquakes, providing medical treatment, shelter, psychological support, and more.

A few weeks ago, a group of Y7 students put together a PowerPoint presentation, which you’ve all seen during form time, and called to action the school community to raise funds to support those impacted by this disaster.

They tasked you with raising just £5, a small amount to give to communities in desperate need.

As expected, you rose to the challenge. There have been all sorts of fundraising activities taking place. From huge physical challenges, to bake sales, tuck shops and raffles, sponsored silences, and a personal highlight of mine, the Mamma Mia Singalong event.

It’s been wonderful to see how enthusiastically you’ve taken on this challenge and thank you to those who have sent in updates and photos of your fundraising efforts.

You were tasked with raising £2300, £5 per student in the senior school and 6th from. At the start of the week, our total stood at £1700, and I’m delighted to announce that the total now stands at £2833 and counting. A special shout-out must go to Mrs Green’s form, who alone raised over £900.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this challenge, every donation counts.

Aid is getting through to survivors, despite the challenges of working in the affected region. Our donations to the DEC charities will help them to scale up their humanitarian response, deliver lifesaving aid and support survivors both now and in the weeks and months ahead.

Once again, thank you for all your support.
