Number Day in Prep School

PUBLISHED 06 February 2023

The Prep School children have been thrilled to take part in the NSPCC Number Day again by raising money to help fund vital services such as Childline and Stay Safe. The children were encouraged to come into school wearing a digit-themed outfit alongside taking part in fun maths activities and problem-solving!

All the classrooms and outdoor areas were buzzing with positivity and competitive rivalry. There were prizes awarded for maths challenges and games, not to mention the best costumes too! The children were also encouraged to give examples of how maths could be used in real-life situations outside the classroom.

Thank you to everyone for supporting today’s event, we all had a fantastic day raising over £170 for this wonderful charity! It’s clear to see how much fun everyone had by looking at today’s photographs! Now, here’s some more reporting from the Round Square Service team, highlighting how each year group spent their day throughout the Prep School!

Nursery

Had non-stop fun enjoying a range of games from simply adding Lego to playing ‘Maths Hedgehogs!’ It was wonderful to see how many of the children displayed excellent number recognition singing their country song.

Reception

Enjoyed a fun and lively day of Maths challenges and games including ‘Battle Dice’ where the children rolled dice, adding and subtracting the results and winning points for the right answers! The team with the most points won! It was great to hear them recall and understand number bonds plus addition and subtraction facts. Great skills!

Year 1

Enjoyed lots of jumping around whilst counting, adding, and subtracting on the move! The children did a wonderful job showing and talking about their calculations focusing on factors, multiples, doubles, and halves! It was great to hear the children share their understanding of numbers so confidently finishing with a game of Bingo! Well done everyone!

Year 2

Absolutely loved their game, ‘The Mystery of the Missing Last Autumn Leaf’ enjoying 5 challenges to find out who stole the last leaf! There were some good old NSPCC favourites also to include,’ including Buddy’s Key challenge’, ‘Scrapyard’, and ‘Getting Home’. It was fantastic to hear the children using mathematical language such as more than, less than, count on, and count back! Well done everyone!

Year 3

Enjoyed an abundance of maths games including drawing Fibonacci spirals and cracking mystery codes. One of their favourite games was ‘Pet Shop’ with pupils imagining themselves on a trip to a pet shop to purchase items for either a puppy or kitten – the challenge was to keep within their budget of £20.00! Great number crunching Year 3!

Year 4

Enjoyed a mixed bag of puzzles, problem-solving, and challenges! ‘Times tables colour by number’ together with ‘Wish Upon a Star’ were favourites with pupils drawing different stars using pentagons and hexagons as well as regular and irregular shapes. This allows children to explore shapes, symmetry, and properties of numbers in a creative setting. It’s also a problem-solving task in which further skills such as systematic working and perseverance are encouraged.

Year 5

Enjoyed a maths-packed day! The children created some very impressive parabolic curves blending Maths with Art, designed curved shapes from the intersection of straight lines. The children made sure to connect points that were at a 90-degree angle and soon realised the greater the points placed, the more compact the curve. I am sure you’ll agree, this is going to make a fantastic display! Finally, children will explore the Fibonacci sequence in a fun and engaging way, using Fibonacci numbers to create their own characters. It is a great opportunity for children to apply their imagination by thinking about what the formation of the spiral could represent. For example, a snail’s shell. Other games included ‘Rolo Fractions’ and if they were correct, they earned the chocolate! This was a great activity to motivate the children to practice identifying equivalent fractions.

Year 6

Pupils enjoyed stretching their minds with a range of problem-solving challenges linked to this term’s focus on percentages and decimals. Many of the children managed to complete the complex ‘Mystery of the Missing Plane Ticket’ finding out that Nathan was indeed the thief! This was followed with class favourites on ‘Maths Playground’, ‘Ultimate Battleships’, and ‘Blooket’. A big thank you also to the Round Square Service students, who provided outstanding coverage by reporting on other year-group activities throughout the day.

Well done everyone!
