Prep School Sport Report: November to December

PUBLISHED 09 December 2022

On 3rd November, Our U11 footballers took part in the Wyre & Fylde Football Festival. With some tenacious displays and resilient performances, the boys did superbly well and came close to winning more games than they did, narrowly losing 2 games by 1.0 score lines and eventually winning 1 and drawing another, with goals on the day from Freddie and Joe - who bagged himself a brace in one game. Max played in goal made some great saves in goal, keeping the team in the games.

On 9th November, the boys welcomed Highfield Priory to AKS for an afternoon of football for both our A and B teams, supported by Mr Worthington and Mr Rice and resulting in a win for the B team and a draw for the A team, who led by 2.0 until the final period of the game. Goals were scored by Harry, Samuel, Isaac, Jack and Jackson.

It's been great to see new faces involved in our football squads and the development of all. Well done Boys!

Our Girls were also in action as they made the trip to Highfield Priory for an afternoon of hockey for both our A and B squads. With both matches providing an opportunity for the girls to further develop their skills, our A team showed great presence on the pitch and came away with a win, with some fine play throughout. Our B team unfortunately lost on this occasion although it is another opportunity to have girls playing competitive hockey once again. Goals were scored by Sophia (3), Sadie (2), Ella and Bella.

On 16th November, our Year 5 and 6 pupils had a competitive afternoon of rugby and hockey vs Kirkham Grammar School, with wins for our B hockey and rugby teams and a narrow defeat for our girls’ A hockey team.

In the rugby, our B team had a fantastic afternoon, scoring 10 tries and working well as a team both defensively and in attack. William and Archie were outstanding in their tackling and defensive work, with Man of the Match, Zach, proving tricky to handle with some great runs down the wings. Tries were scored by Jack (3) James (3) William (2) Samuel and Zach.

Our A and B hockey squads had two very competitive games with a win for each school. Our As had a very close game, with a narrow defeat despite all their efforts. Of particular note was Leila, who made her debut in goal and Sadie, who scored the only goal of the game for AKS.

The Bs had a more successful result with some great teamwork, with goals from Lucy, Bella and Poppy. Well done girls!

On 18th November, our U11A Rugby Squad attended the Stockport Grammar Rugby Festival, competing against various other Independent Schools from across the North West. With competition high, our boys had to work extremely hard in all their matches and scored some magnificent tries with some great tackles and offensive play throughout. Well done to the team and try-scorers: Archie, Will H, William, Noah, Joe and George.

On 23rd March, our U11A Squad travelled to Scarisbrick Hall to take part in an afternoon's rugby with Kirkham Grammar and Merchant Taylors. The morning’s storms made for a muddy afternoon, undeterred, the boys gave another great account of themselves, with every boy giving their all. There were notable improvements in tackling, as well as the confidence to carry the ball forward. Tries were scored by Archie, Jackson and Joe.

On the same day, our U9 Football squads travelled to Rossall for two friendly fixtures which were the first time that many of the boys had represented the school. The boys relished the challenge and the games resulted in a defeat for our A squad and a win, loss and draw for our B squad. Goals were scored by George and Raife.

Our U10 Girls hockey squads welcomed Rossall to AKS for an afternoon of hockey, in the first outing for our newly-formed teams. With both sets of girls working well, it was great to see so many girls developing their skills on the pitch. Our A squad suffered a narrow defeat with our B squad making a real statement of intent with a great win. Congratulations to all. Goals were scored by: (A) Penny, (B) Emily H (4), Winnie VR (2), Kaitlin (3) and Sienna.

On 6th December, with the cold weather setting in, our Year 3 and 4 swimmers took to the pool and raised the temperature with some sizzling performances. This house competition brought to an end this term’s swimming lessons.

We had some very close races in both year groups, with the gap between 1st to 3rd being separated by under 1 second in majority of the races

Year Group Champions:

Year 3 Boys - William S and Arthur

Year 3 Girl - Willow

Year 4 Boy - William Cl

Year 4 Girl - Emilia D

It was also a very close House event with overall winners Leighton taking the title from Gawthorpe by only 2 points.

We now look forward to the Junior Gala (Years 5 and 6) on 13th December – good luck everyone!
