The Headmaster’s Lecture series continued on Monday 28th November with an insightful and highly enjoyable talk by Tim Marshall, the author of ‘Prisoners of Geography’ and ‘Power of Geography’. After an introduction by Mr Harrow, who referenced the Collins word of the year, ‘permacrisis’, Tim talked through many of the geopolitical issues that are of concern in the world today.

To a packed senior hall, Tim’s wide-reaching talk covered the shift from a bipolar world of the late 20th Century where the cold war dominated political thinking, to the more multi-polar world we find ourselves in now. Tim encouraged the audience to look at the world from various different perspectives, including how both Russia and China see their position and any potential threats to their sovereignty and regional influence. This gave the audience much to think about, especially as Tim concluded his lecture by talking about the new spheres of influence opening up in our exploration of both near and far orbits of the earth and the political ramifications of such actions by the main players in the new space race, whether they be states or individuals, such as Elon Musk.

Audience members left after an entertaining and informative lecture from one of the leading geopolitical journalists and commentators who finished on a positive note about the future of space exploration. The message that came across throughout the lecture was the importance of understanding the geography of where you are studying and how this is crucial in finding our way forward into the 21st Century.
