Girls beat the weather to enjoy great morning of hockey at Altrincham

AKS hockey teams were grateful for a break in the bad weather as they enjoyed another successful Saturday morning of hockey with four teams coming out on top in the six matches against the traditionally strong Altrincham Girls Grammar School.

Conceding two early goals the U12A team faced an uphill challenge in what proved to be a tough but exciting game against a strong Altrincham side. AKS got back into the game with Layla running through on the right to beat the goalkeeper with a well placed shot. Keen to attack, AKS were often left exposed at the back but sweeper Esther covered well to break down the opposition attacks and a late goal from Lola evened the score at half time. With Altrincham taking the lead again early in the second half, AKS knew they had to defend better and began to release the ball quicker thus becoming more clinical in attack. The Altrincham defence and goalkeeper did not make it easy for the attack and it took two almost identical superbly taken reverse stick shots from Layla to give AKS the hard fought 4-3 win. Player of the match was Esther who defended confidently under pressure throughout the game.

The U12B team had a very competitive game against Altrincham Girls Grammar School this weekend.  They were keen to put the pressure on from the first whistle with some excellent driving runs down the right side of the pitch by Sophia.  She was able to exploit the space and use it to create attack, after attack.  Charlotte was calm in defence making some very good tackles and then sending the ball wide.  AKS worked hard throughout the first half to put AGGS under pressure but the sore remained at 0 - 0.  We began the second half in the same way and kept up the attacking play down right, this eventually paid off as Chloe was able to put the ball in on the left post.  AKS were able to hold onto the 1-0 lead until the final whistle. Player of the match was Georgia.

AKS U13A team faced a much improved Altrincham side who started the game on the front foot and put us under pressure from the start. Altrincham attacked at pace and took a two goal lead. We had a chance to get one back when a good driving run by Alexa on the right saw her get behind the defence and lay a perfect pass to Holly but she saw her shot fly past the post and we went into the break at 0 – 2.  The second half saw us enjoy more possession with Charlotte dominant in the centre and Alexa & Holly always a threat up front and we deservedly got a goal back with a superb strike from Charlotte. We continued to press but needed good defending from Evie, Sophie and Pryanka to thwart the Altrincham efforts. Despite our best efforts we could not get an equalising goal and at the final whistle the score was 1 – 2. Players of the match were Charlotte for her dominant play and Danni  for some great saves.

A pleasing whole team performance by AKS U13 B team resulted with a deserved win. The girls played well, showing great passing patterns across the team enabling AKS to dominate large periods of possession in their attacking circle. Many goal scoring opportunities were narrowly missed however, AKS U13 B’s remained patient and were finally rewarded by a well-executed goal by Sophie just after the break. Holly scored the second goal and as the team continued to work together and Charlotte secured a 3-0 victory with her accomplished goal. The team should be proud of their performance and have demonstrated much development throughout many areas of their play. Players of the match were Charlotte and Emma.

The U14 team put in a dominant performance and deservedly came out as 6 – 0 winners. Lucy opened the scoring with a great strike and we were soon 3 – 0 up when Katie scored a brace of goals after good work by Laura. Another great strike from Lucy and a superb driving run and shot from Olivia made it 5 – 0. The final goal saw Mady R in an unusual position creating goals rather than stopping them as she was involved in the build up which saw the ball fed to Carys  who netted to make it 6 – 0.

After a good win last week the U15 side went into the game in high spirits but came up against a fast, skilful Altrincham side that had two wins over us already this season and they again proved tough opposition. Altrincham started on the front foot passing and moving well and they went ahead in the 6th minute after a good move saw them give Mady no chance in goal. Good corner defence and improved defending thwarted the Altrincham attacks and Ziv was a threat up front and came close to scoring only to have her shot well saved by the Altrincham keeper. Altrinhcam found the net twice more before a great break from the lively Ziv saw her beat the defence and lay the perfect pass to Poppy. Her shot was well saved by the keeper but Nyah was on hand to pick up the rebound and slot home to make it 1 – 3 at the break. The second half saw Altrinhcam dominate both possession and shots but Mady had a storming game in goal to repel numerous efforts and keep the score down to 4 goals in the second half. Poppy worked hard in midfield and Ellie was solid at the back, both putting in performances that earnt then player of the match nominations along with Mady in goal.
