AKS are celebrating more hockey success as the U13 Girls Hockey Team continued their impressive season so far remaining undefeated in the North West Semi Final of the National In2 Hockey Championships to be crowned Champions and qualify for the North of England Finals later in the month.

In a close contest, with the final places being decided in the final rounds of the tournament, AKS went from strength to strength playing superb hockey and showing great team work, resilience and determination scoring 26 goals whilst conceding only 3!

We got off to the perfect start with an impressive 7 – 0 victory against Liverpool College. Playing great passing hockey all the team contributed to the win with goals from Jessie (2), Carley (2) Layla , Sophie and Lisa .

With points on the board we went into the second game in confident mood but came up against a strong , physical Queens, Chester side who attacked at pace and put us on the back foot. Great defending from Lisa, Jessica and Layla limited the Queen’s scoring chances but it was Queen’s who took the lead in the first half. The second half saw us get back to our confident passing hockey and enjoy a lot of possession of our own. Charlotte linked well with Carley on the right and when she played a superb cross into the circle Jessie was on hand to find the net with a superb shot to make it 1 -1. Both teams battled to get a winner but at the final whistle honours were even at 1 – 1.

Next up were Cheadle Hulme School and another superb display of passing hockey saw us win 4 – 1 with goals from Jessis (2) Carley and Kirtika. A 5 – 1 victory over Hill House, School thanks to a Jessie hatrick along with goals from Charlotte and Carley saw us building up the points and going in to the last two games qualification for the North Finals within our grasp.

With two rounds of the tournament to play the final positions were in the balance and three schools, including AKS had realistic chances of claiming top spot.

Our penultimate game was against King Williams College from the Isle of Man and we knew that a win was vital if we were to claim top spot. Now playing our best hockey of the tournament and growing in confidence we started quickly and put King William under pressure from the first whistle. We continued to press and this paid off as a King William defender scored into her own goal to give us an early lead. Lifted by the goal we dominated down the right with Layla driving forwards at every opportunity and when she found the net to make it 2 – 0 with a great strike at a corner there was no looking back and further goals from Charlotte, Kirtika, Carley and Lisa made the final score 6 – 0.

The final game saw us rise to the challenge of remaining undefeated against a Kirkby Stephen School who boasted a number of very talented players. Determined to come out as winners we raised our game and played our best hockey of the day. Great team play, passing well and working hard for each other both in attack and defence saw us go ahead with prolific scorer Jessie scoring again after more great work on the right from Carley. With our noses infront we had to work hard tackling back to win back possession but when Jessie was on target again confidence grew as we went into the break 2 – 0 ahead. Kirkby Stephen were always dangerous but all the girls continued to work together and when Jessie scored her hat-trick goal late in the game the win was secured along with top spot.

With 5 wins and a draw, scoring 26 goals , 15 more than any other team, while conceding only three  AKS were deservedly crowned North West Champions ahead of 2nd place Queens, Chester and both school now progress into the North of England Finals in Leeds at the end of March.
