To celebrate the spooky season pupils in year 9, 11, 12 and 13 took up the challenge of transforming into some of Shakespeare’s scariest characters.

Year 9 pupils Vaani, Jessica and Anya teamed up with year 11 pupils Miranda and Keira to share the role of Lady Macbeth. In Act 5 Scene 1 of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth is haunted by her murderous actions as she slowly descends into madness. Through her guilt she views her hands forever stained with the blood of the life she took.

Traditionally set in a Scottish manor our interpretation quite aptly sees pupils re-enact the scene in a bathroom, with Lady Macbeth franticly washing her hands (a routine we all now know too well). The monologue itself was very short and sweet, and what I found quite striking was the range of interpretations each pupil presented – not one line or utterance was truly the same. Cleverly these monologues have been edited together highlighting the different strengths of each performer.

Similarly, year 12 pupils Oliver, Edward and Fraser teamed up with year 13 pupil J Jay to share the role of Aaron from one of Shakespeare’s most gruesome and gory plays, Titus Andronicus. In Act 5 Scene 1 Aaron awaits his hanging, a punishment ordered by Titus for his evil actions and manipulative behaviours. Each pupil memorised a section of dialogue, bringing a range of different emotions to the overall performance.

As pupils are constantly adapting to the changing situation, we find ourselves in, it's wonderful to see that although separated, pupils from across the years can collaborate and share the virtual stage.
