At AKS we always take time to look back and reflect upon the sacrifices and lives lost due to war. Remembrance is commemorated with our AKS community and forms part of some lessons.
In year 8 Design & Technology lessons, pupils have been busy reimagining plastic waste and conjuring up new inventive product ideas, made from throw away plastic.
Charlotte decided to make some Remembrance poppies from recycled plastic bottles and we interviewed Charlotte about her project.
"I think that remembrance is a really important time that we need to remember the bravery of the soldiers. In D&T lessons the competition was to design & make your own recycled plastic product and upcycle into a new functioning invention. We had practised lots of ideas in lessons and I wanted my design to stand out and to have a chance of winning!
To make my Remembrance poppies firstly I cut the bottoms off the plastic bottles and painted them red, adding a couple of coats so the red was vibrant, like real poppies, found in Flanders Field. Next, I got the lids of the bottles and stuck them in the centre of the poppies. This was a bit tricky as I used a hot glue gun and got my mum to help, ensuring that we didn't burn ourselves. To display the poppies, I decided to cover a canvas in black paint, so the poppies would stand out but also to represent the blackout experienced by many during the war time. My Grandad also helped and created the wooden feet at the base, to allow my poppy canvas to stand up.
I really enjoyed making this project as it enabled me to spend time with my family, whilst being creative".
Our Head of Design & Technology Miss Burke commented:
"If you look closely at Charlotte's recycled poppies you can see the stems of the bottom poppies are in a V shape for Victory. The material means the poppies can easily be reused and actually could be on display outside, meaning one less waste item sent to landfill!. Often in year 8 we have pupils who recycle plastic whilst paying tribute to those effected by war or deprivation, with product ideas often designed to help and improve everyday life. We are very proud of our pupil efforts here at AKS showing real respect and cultural appreciation."
