In what has become an annual tradition, the drama studio was packed to the rafters at breaktime today, with students from Years 7 to 13 waiting patiently alongside staff for this year's musical announcement. Martha Worthington, Head of Drama, gave her usual cryptic announcement speech with hints woven throughout. This year's musical - The Little Shop of Horrors - was finally revealed to much fanfare (and confetti!), before students saw a taste of what they've got to look forward to, with snippets of the stage production shown on the big screen.
Loosely based on the 1960 film, Little Shop Of Horrors follows the story of a man and his blood-thirsty plant. Set in the 1960s, Little Shop Of Horrors follows Seymour Krelborn, a menial assistant at a floral shop on Skid Row. He comes across a strange and bizarre plant, which he names “Audrey II” after his crush, Audrey, a woman with mental distress over her life, including in her relationship with her abusive boyfriend, Orin Scrivello. However, as this plant grows, it begins to develop a sassy temper and a hunger for human flesh and blood.
The musical was chosen as it provides fantastic scope for our talented performers, as well as providing great creative potential for the creative team who're known for putting their own twist on stage design and direction. Quirky, fun and with a cracking soundtrack - it's got 'AKS Musical' written all over it!
Students were invited to pick up a flyer with a QR code to the audition pack (here) and the Performing Arts team look forward to the auditions which will take place on Wednesday 20th September (with call-backs the day after).
