Senior School

Welcome to Senior School

At AKS Senior School, we aim to develop compassionate, responsible, and capable young people who are prepared to thrive in a changing world. Students are encouraged to be curious and ambitious, building strong communication skills and learning how to work well with others.

Our Senior School offers a broad academic experience alongside a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom, helping students grow in confidence and prepare for the next stage of their education and life beyond school.

Based in Lytham St Annes, Senior School is accessible from across the Fylde Coast and Preston area, supported by school transport routes including key stops in Blackpool, Kirkham and Fulwood.

Sport plays a major role in Senior School life, with opportunities across rugby, hockey, netball, football, athletics, cricket and tennis, alongside sports such as table tennis and basketball.

Performing Arts is also a valued part of school life, with instrumental teaching, support for LAMDA qualifications, and performance opportunities ranging from smaller productions to popular shows at the Lowther Pavilion.

Inspired by Kurt Hahn’s philosophy, we encourage students to discover “more in them than they know”. Our ambition is for every student to develop their talents, succeed academically, and find confidence through sport, the arts, and wider experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the maximum class sizes for senior school?

At AKS Lytham Senior School our class sizes are never more than 25 students, and it is often quite a lot less than that depending on the subject.

Is it possible to move a student to AKS Lytham mid-term or mid-school?

Yes, students are welcome at any point. We will do everything we can to accommodate you. Please speak to our admissions team for more information and to book in a tour of the school.

Does AKS Lytham accept applications for Year groups other than year 7

Yes, we would encourage anybody interested in joining AKS Lytham to come and have a chat to our staff and admissions team. We have students who join us for various reasons at various times of their lives. Some students have been with us since Prep School, others join in Year 10 for their GCSE’s.

Are Year 7 classes streamed?

To ensure that all of our students are both stretched and supported in their development, our maths classes are streamed.

In general, our other subject are largely not streamed, however these are different mix of classes across the subjects.

How does AKS support students though school and communicate and struggles with parents?

We want our students to feel happy, safe and secure, so that they can do well in what they want to do. We have a fantastic pastoral team and system in place, that will start before student’s have even joined Year 7.

Due to our relatively small form groups and class sizes, we can flag up any areas for discussion quickly. Our form tutors will make direct contact with the Parents once the students have been at the school for a few weeks. As well as this, there are regular reports available for parents, as well as ‘Parent Teacher’ meetings. We monitor the students both academically and pastorally.

How is the curriculum organised for Senior school?

We are a holistic school. We offer a core academic curriculum, but also offer a range of other sport and co-curricular activities for the students to partake in as well. We believe that this is fundamental to our students’ development and growth.

Year 7 students will primarily focus on core subjects and as they move through the school years, they can specialise in certain subjects.

How do you manage the Year 7 transition process?

We have a range of events and activities to ensure that new Year 7 students have experienced the school and the teachers before starting, and that they have made friends with fellow students, ensuring that they are not alone when they come to school in September.

How does the Year 7 assessment day work?

The idea of doing a test or exam to join Year 7 might seem rather daunting, but please do not worry about it.

We use a computerised test that essentially is looking to measure potential, separate from the syllabus, that will take approximately 1 hour.

However, our entrance criteria is, that if you can access our curriculum, enjoy it, and do well out of it, then you are welcome. The test itself isn’t used to be extremely selective.

You will then have a chat with one of our senior staff members, to tell us all about yourself and what you enjoy.

How often do parents receive reports?

Along side parent – teacher meetings, parents will receive two reports every term to gauge grades, effort and attainment, as well as full reports.

If parents have any particular concerns, they can get in touch with the student’s form teacher or their head of school.

What age range is the Senior School for?

AKS Senior School supports pupils through the secondary years and prepares them for the next stage into Sixth Form. Admissions can advise on the most appropriate entry point for your child.

How do I apply for Year 7 or another year group?

The best first step is to arrange a visit. Admissions will then guide you through the application process, including next steps and any relevant entry requirements.

Can we visit the Senior School before applying?

Yes. Families are encouraged to visit. A tour helps you understand the school environment, meet staff, and get a feel for academic and pastoral life.

What is the curriculum like in Senior School?

Senior School provides a broad curriculum with a strong focus on academic foundations alongside opportunities beyond the classroom. Subject pathways and options are shared through the curriculum pages, and the Admissions team can assist with any queries you may have.

How is pastoral care and wellbeing supported?

Pupil wellbeing is supported through a strong pastoral structure, with staff working closely with families to help pupils feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. We have a wellbeing hub on-site, run by our students called VENT, to allow all of our students a safe space to share anything that is on their mind.

What co-curricular opportunities are available?

Senior School life includes a wide co-curricular programme. The co-curricular programme runs before school, lunchtime and after school and changes each term. If students have an interest which is not catered for by our programme, then we support the students to take the lead in setting up their own club.

Do you offer scholarships or financial support?

AKS offers information on scholarships and financial support through Admissions. Eligibility and application details can be discussed with the team as part of the admissions process.

Do you offer school transport for Senior School pupils?

School transport routes support access from across the Fylde Coast and Preston area. Admissions can advise on transport information and direct families to the transport routes and portal.
