Nursery and Prep 'Leaf Mandala' Collaboration

Nursery and Prep 'Leaf Mandala' Collaboration

"Every child brought in, or was given a leaf to put a spiral in the order of Autumn shades."

To celebrate the Autumn season, across the Pre-Preparatory School from 2-11 years we created a leaf mandala in Outdoor Learning sessions to explore 'nature art'.

The children brought in or were given leaves, from our local community and sorted them into colours. Placing the leaf in the right place to match the pattern. It was great to listen to the children talk about the different colours and shapes of the leaves. The children could see the different shades of the Autumn Season, as each class added to it.

This idea was the brain child of Jo Fitton, Deputy Nursery Manager, she explained, "I was planning for Outdoor Education sessions and saw the idea of nature art and mandalas. I thought how amazing it would be to create something like that at AKS on our field. In order to make it as big and impactful as possible, the Nursery joined forces with the Preparatory School to create a collaborative piece. Every child brought in, or was given a leaf to put a spiral in the order of Autumn shades. Despite adverse wind and rain, we were able to work under the all-weather canopy in the playground. We achieved the outcome as planned and the children were proud of what we created by involving all our pupils from two to eleven years. We love to learn outdoors."
