Last week 7 students from Year 12 took part in the Round Square International Conference. This was a virtual event, where students discussed issues with students from around the world. The students navigated through a virtual gaming platform by their own created and outfitted avatar, there was a cinema room, fire pit discussion areas, picnic blankets for debates and a yoga room. Having approached the event with interest, curiosity and a sense of the unknown the students were quick to make use of the amazing virtual facilities and opportunities.
Students listened intently to guest speakers including Adedoyin Olayiwola "Ade" Adepitan MBE a Nigerian-born British television presenter and Wheelchair basketball player. Also Industrialist and adventurer, Sir David Hempleman Adams OBE, who is the first person to complete the Adventurers Grand Slam, by reaching the Geographic and Magnetic North and South Poles as well as climbing the highest peaks in all seven continents. The speakers inspired and intrigued us with their knowledge, experience, and ideas about identity, ethical leadership and climate action.
The RSIC was entitled ‘Blue skies and Brave Conversations’, the conference allowed for brave, diplomatic, and fascinating conversations to be held between students from around the world. The students really did themselves proud by opening up and exploring their own values around issues that are relevant and prominent in our daily lives, they each came across in a professional and well-mannered way, congratulating other students on their thought-provoking and well thought out responses, whilst adding their own captivating answers.
It was a fantastic event to be a part of and I would encourage as many students to get involved in collaborations between other schools from around the globe within the Round Square group.
