Another successful Saturday of hockey for AKS teams

PUBLISHED 15 September 2019

It was another excellent Saturday morning of hockey with AKS coming out on top against Wilmslow High School with three wins in the four games.

The U15/16 game saw us start well and we went ahead in only the 2nd minute after Nyah intercepted a hit-out and then drove into the circle and hit an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to take us into the lead. A good effort from Ziv minutes later flew just wide and after dominating the ball we deservedly went further ahead in the 10th minute when Hannah got on the scoresheet. Great interplay between Hannah and Nyah on the wing saw us dominate down the right and create a number of chances but we had to wait until just before the break to extend our lead. More good passing hockey saw the ball fall to Freya  and she cleverly reversed the ball high into the net to make it 3 – 0. After the break Wilmslow did enjoy more of the ball but solid defending from Ellie , Abigail , Imogen and Mia thwarted the Wilmslow efforts and when they did get a shot on target Eva was on hand to keep the ball out of the net. We went further ahead in the 10th minute when Ziv finished a superb move with a great shot into the roof of the net and Ziv got her second and the team 5th before the final whistle after great pressing from Prisha to make the final score 5 – 0. Always dangerous up front Ziv was voted player of the match.

The AKS U14 team worked hard from the start to set up goal scoring opportunities and ten minutes into the game were rewarded with a Patsy goal. Always dangerous on the break Wilmslow tested the AKS defence but sweeper Beth read the game well to make some crucial interceptions. An early second half goal from Katy settled the AKS team and they began to play with confidence and have much more of the possession. Lucy held the middle well while Laura  was dominant on the right. Good pressure from the AKS forwards led to a goalmouth scramble with Patsy eventually pouncing onto a loose ball to give AKS a well deserved 3-0 win. The game was not as one sided as the score suggests and player of the match was Beth whose ‘unflappable’ performance in defence was key to a good team performance.

The U13 A team played against a strong Wilmslow side and had to defend well from the start. Wilmslow attacked at pace and only good tackling from Priyanka , Katie and Holly limited the Wilmslow scoring opportunities. We slowly started to find space in our attacking end and Alexa  and Sohpie were always a threat up front. We were grateful for some superb saves from Maisy in goal to keep the ball out of the net and we went into the break level at 0 – 0. The second half saw us mark more effectively in defence to deny Wilmslow forwards space and with Evie linking our attack and defence well we started to pass the ball more effectively and dominate down the right. We forced the Wilmslow keeper into some good saves but it was Wilmslow who eventually broke the deadlock  late in the game with a scrappy goal just before the final whistle. Priyanka and Maisy were named as players of the match.

The AKS U13/14B team started the game a little hesitantly, due to many of them playing with each other for the first time but it didn’t take them long to start moving the ball to each other with confidence. Enjoying the lion’s share of possession AKS created a number of chances and deservedly went into the break with a 2 – 0 lead. The second half saw us continue to press the opposition and be effective in possession and after goals from Zara, Katie and Sophie the game was sealed by a tremendous finish from Zara whose rocket of a shot found the bottom left corner to make the final score 4 – 0. Players of the match were Poppy and Zara .

Overall another superb morning of hockey and we now look for another block fixture against Altrincham next Saturday.
