Stardust Diner - a wonderful evening of fundraising - Ellie, Year 11

PUBLISHED 26 September 2024

On one of September’s ‘Summer Nights,’ we invited an audience to ‘Consider Themselves’ part of the Drama Department family for the ‘Stardust Diner’ in the OAKS hall. The purpose of the event was to raise money for the school's production of Sweeney Todd at the Lowther Pavilion, due to take place in January 2025. This included a meal inspired my Mrs Lovett’s pies, which left the audience saying ‘God, That’s Good’! Opening the show was Henry C who is playing our Sweeney Todd singing ‘Be Our Guest’, from Beauty and the Beast, followed by Jacob singing ‘Willkommen’ from Cabaret. Both songs left the audience ‘Helpless’ for the talent on offer from our Sweeney cast.

My highlight from the evening would have to be when I performed ‘Does Your Mother Know?’ from Mamma Mia! I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to perform especially with this being my first time singing to an audience. Understandably, I was very nervous to take this on, my mind was eased by the support and positivity from backstage, which made me ready to perform. As soon as I got on stage, Tonya’s character came to life as she cheekily teased the boys. Even though I’m no Billy Elliot, it was ‘Big Fun’ to let loose and have a dance on stage because it felt natural to the character. The buzz I get from being on stage is my favourite thing about performing, I love to think that I have an impact on how the audience feels. With this performance, I wanted them to enjoy the high energy feel of the song and maybe join in with me. I’d like to thank all the boys and Year 10 girls for helping me bring the song to life; everyone involved made it a truly incredible experience. After all, we really are ‘The Nicest Kids in Town.’

Although I enjoyed my time in the Spotlight, my favourite performance of the night was ‘Greased Lightning’ performed by the boys involved in the fundraiser. It was the perfect way to end a brilliant evening, because it got everyone involved through dancing and singing along. Grease is one of my favourite musicals so I may be slightly bias, but I thought they did justice to John Travolta and the T-birds from the original movie. I had a memorable time getting involved at the end for ‘One Last Time’ with the rest of the performers. We had ‘Non-Stop’ enthusiasm for the evening and were ‘Hopelessly Devoted’ to producing our performances to the same standard as any other event within the Performing Arts Department at AKS.

Also performing from the Sweeney Todd principal cast was Ella who is playing our Mrs Lovett. She gave a larger-than-life performance of ‘Don’t Rain on my Parade’ which she sang gorgeously. I think I speak for everyone when I say I can’t wait to see her in the annual school musical early next year. Even our Director, Miss Worthington was in ‘The Room Where It Happens!’ who alongside AKS alumni, Alex W, performed a rendition of ‘5000 Miles’ to get the audience excited for the evening ahead.

After this fundraiser we are sure ‘You’ll Be Back’ to see Sweeney Todd in January. Congratulations, to all the cast members who served and performed at the diner. I’m honoured to be a part of such a talented and supportive cast. It’s truly amazing to see everyone ‘Shine a Light’ on their talents. I also want to wish a huge congratulations to everyone who worked behind the scenes, including band members, Performing Arts staff and kitchen staff, who worked tirelessly to make the night so magical; it wouldn’t be possible without their efforts. ‘So long, Farewell’ until next time! Ellie Tyler – Year 11

“The evening was a fantastic event for both students and parents to get involved and enjoy a great selection of music from a diverse genre of different musicals! My favourite performance was Sammy and Ella’s duet of ‘I know Him so Well’ from Chess” – Alex C (AKS alumni)
