AKS U12 Boys crowned winners at Bury Grammar School Rugby Sevens Tournament

PUBLISHED 08 March 2023

Our U12 boys shone at the Bury Grammar School U12s Rugby Sevens Tournament. Full tournament report below:

Match 1 - Stockport GS v AKS Lytham Score: 5-25 Tries: Frank C, Will H 2, Monty M 2

A scrappy, error-filled performance by AKS, but Stockport allowed AKS to dominate with Will H, in particular, being able to impose himself with aggressive, penetrating runs MOM - Will H

Match 2 - Manchester GS v AKS Score: 25-35 Tries: Will H 3, Monty M, Hugo H

A close-fought, game full of attrition, skill and heart. Manchester were more of a test for AKS with the lead switching back and forth. The difference was better defence from AKS and try-saving tackles came from Will H and Monty M more than once. MOM - Monty M

Match 3 - Bury GS v AKS Lytham Score: 0 - 35 Tries: Monty M 3, Thomas C 2, Will H, Hugo H.

AKS completely dominated this game scoring almost at will, being hampered only by their inability to secure clean ruck ball and constant handling errors. However, the signs were there of what was to come in the final...strong, coordinated defence, scything attacks from every part of the pitch and a never-say-die attitude.

Tournament Final Match - Cheadle Hulme v AKS Lytham Score: 5 - 10

Tries: Will H 2

The final was a tense affair with the first half seeing both sides coming close to breaking the deadlock more than once. AKS were aggressive and well-organised in defence frustrating Cheadle and forcing errors through quick line speed and brave tackling. The first half ended with both sides believing the victory was there for the taking although AKS looked the slightly stronger side. The second half saw AKS probing constantly led tenaciously by Monty M. Their defensive acumen allowed them to guard a clean sheet whilst defending with such ZEAL in the opponent's half that the ensuing errors led to a Will H try. Thomas C made the final's bravest and possibly game-saving tackle from a Cheadle penalty run in from 10 m off the AKS line this really was a decisive moment in the match. Following this crunching tackle AKS went on the attack with Monty M going on a solo run that almost led to a try, but which actually set the stage for another score from Will H. Cheadle managed to steal one back at the death but the trophy was AKS' and the whistle heralded a well-deserved win for a jubilant AKS U12 squad!

Many thanks to Bury GS for their generosity in hosting this tournament.

AKS' 7s game has improved immeasurably since last Friday when they won the Bowl Final at Wirral GS 7s Tournament. Things have clicked into place and they are looking promising for the next tournament at Liverpool.

Man of the Tournament goes to Monty M with honourable mentions for Will H and Thomas C

Champagne Moment. Thomas C for his game-saving tackle in the final. What a hit!
